7+ Tips to Prepare for Your Portrait Session

Here are a few tips on how to get ready for your portrait session. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Dress comfortably

  • Wear clothes that you feel confident and comfortable in. You'll enjoy your session more if you're comfortable.

  • Consider the weather when choosing clothes.

Choose neutral colors

  • Classic and timeless colors are good options. For example, bring one light neutral (cream, beige, or olive), one dark (black, brown, gray), and one bright color.

  • For family or group sessions, choose coordinating colors instead of matching outfits.

  • Discuss outfit suggestions with the photographer.

Avoid excessive patterns and text

  • Solid colors are best; you can stick with softer colors, jewel tones, or neutrals.

  • Avoid neon colors, oversized logos, and busy patterns.

  • A caveat is if bold patterns, colors, or accessories are your signature. In that case, we want to capture you.

Add accessories

  • You can bring ties, sunglasses, and hats to change your look throughout the shoot. Bring more options than you need, such as different shirts, suit jackets, and ties.

Layer

  • We are in Texas, so we usually don't worry about layers, but if weather permits or if we are in the studio, Layering can add depth and interest.

Location

  • If the session is at home, send photos of the space to the photographer beforehand.

Hair: Keep it neat

  • If you need a haircut, schedule it a few days before the session to allow your hair to settle and look natural. Some recommend 10 days before the session.

  • Choose a hairstyle that suits your style while appearing professional.

  • Ensure your hair is clean and neatly styled on the shoot day.

  • For those with facial hair, ensure that your beard or mustache is well-groomed and trimmed to maintain a polished appearance.

Final tips

  • The night before your shoot, ensure you get a good night's sleep and stay hydrated, which will help you look fresh and energized for your session.

  • Remember to relax and be yourself during the session. Your confidence and authenticity will shine through in the final images.
