Why I’m a Photographer

Why photography?

I was introduced to photography during a college elective class; it gave me a needed creative outlet, given my engineering track. The class would have us shoot slide film to share on the projector, but developing the film was a weekly odyssey. At the time, I was working the midnight shift and would clock out from work at 7 AM. The nearest lab developing slides in an hour was in South Beach. After work, I would drive over an hour in traffic towards South Beach to have the film developed; meanwhile, I slept in the car while the lab did its thing.

I continued to shoot, first documenting my life as I moved from Miami to Austin and how I met my wife. Then, I documented my travel and adventures with Vanessa and later became a 'Dad with a camera.' I do what I do to keep the memories of the people I love and the experiences shaping our lives. I would like for you to have the same opportunity.

Be it through a snapshot from your day at Disney or a mixed-media family portrait commission taking center stage in your living room. The critical part is the experience. Kids will not always be kids, and we all pass away at some point; the memories we leave behind are how our loved ones celebrate us. Have you not watched Coco?

Why dance photography?

In part, dance has always been an essential part of my life. Dance gave me wings in college, helped me meet my now-wife, and today helps me bond with my princesses. The other part was chance; I fell into it thanks to my sister-in-law, a ballet instructor and studio owner. But I continued because I love providing parents with a memory of their baby --they'll always be our babies-- when they do their first recital, wear their first costume, perform their first solo, or become the Sugar Plum Fairy. I also enjoy seeing the kids grow and their skills take off year after year. I enjoy being part of it, even if it's just for one day a year. One day, I hope it'll be my girls I'm capturing on their first…
